Olivia Rodrigo just dropped a brand new music video for “brutal,” the first track on her debut album, SOUR, and it’s filled with angsty teens, ballerinas, and the campiest use of Instagram filters we’ve ever seen.

Teaming up with frequent collaborator, Petra Collins, Rodrigo partnered with the director to spin together the visual embodiment of the question, “where’s my f***ing teenage dream?” Collins also worked with Rodrigo to direct her latex glove-clad, cheerleader moment in the “good 4 u” music video.
As we enter into the video-game simulation of being a teenager riddled with anxiety, we see the “drivers license” singer playing different roles throughout the visual piece. Taking on a ballerina who snaps her ankles, a perfectly quaffed newscaster, an influencer named “spicypiscesnyc” wrapped in silver spandex, and a rebellious teenager, the singer is giving us her take on the work that comes with being a woman.
Giving us all the perspectives, Olivia shows us a young celebrity being “exploited,” a newscaster who is provoking public interest about the young celeb…despite accuracy, and an impressionable high school girl taking in all the angles through mediums of communication all on her iPhone. As the 18-year-old delivers all these roles, her face is covered in Instagram-like filters that match the energy and emotion of the track.
Finally, as all the pressure mounts we see a teen girl and her backup ballerinas dancing on the hoods of cars, as Olivia rails against societal standards and reminds us all that, “God, it’s brutal out here.”
