Two bags of groceries, $100 spent -- sounds about normal these days, right? But it turns out it wasn't that long ago where a receipt could spiral the length of a CVS coupon print-out and cost ... not that much.

A grocery receipt that's going viral proves it.

The receipt in question costs a total of $161.87 for 79 items. 79! Discovered while going through a mother’s old belongings, the woman who found it said the receipt made her 'fall to her knees.'

Safe to say, it has sparked a viral conversation about food inflation. The Internet did the math and discovered the same shopping list likely costing well over $400 today. At the same time, real wages over the last twenty years have increased about 10-15%, per the Social Security Administration.

The resurfaced receipt serves as a time capsule of grocery pricing, emphasizing the significant rise in food costs and the strain on consumers' budgets. "Literally just sat here with my auntie and grandma reading everything and we all mad all over again," Ashanti wrote on X.

"I was remembering a spring break road trip from college the other day - I remember getting gas on the drive in GA for $.77 a gallon in 1997," Elise S. Quinn wrote on Facebook. while Anthony R. Reeves added, "I’ve got receipts all the way back to the 1980s . It’s mind boggling how much things have increased."
