Apple is updating the most popular tablet on the market: the iPad, according to Bloomberg.
The new iPad Pro design replaces the aluminum back enclosure with glass, Bloomberg reports, similar to the iPhone 12. It also adds the wireless charging feature currently only available on iPhones. The design change is being made likely to accommodate the new charging capability.
According to Bloomberg, Apple will retain the iPad Pro's Thunderbolt port to charge with a cord.
The iPad mini will get its first update in six years. Bloomberg says Apple will trim the screen's borders, making them narrower, and is considering removing the physical home button altogether.
Tablet sales grew exponentially from 2010-2014. Since then, sales had tapered off, steadily decreasing each year. During the pandemic, iPad sales soared. Apple wants to capitalize on their increased popularity.
Behind the scenes, the Silicon Valley company is working on a new technology called "reverse wireless charging." It allows Apple devices to share their battery power through physical contact.
Expect the new iPad mini to be released by the end of the year. The new iPad Pro hits shelves in 2022.
