The new average monthly benefits will increase by $36 per person to $157 per month. The rise will impact all 42 million people in the food-stamp program, and proponents hope the additional money per month will help those who need the assistance to buy healthier options.

Currently, one out of every eight Americans receives food stamps, and more than 75% use up their benefits in the first half of the month.
The Biden administration does not need Congressional approval for the benefit increase.
