Trump brawls with GOP senator at D.C. lunch

Growing tension between Donald Trump and Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy resulted in a verbal confrontation Wednesday. Reports reveal the spat reached a point where another senator had to “pull him (Cassidy) back down into his seat."

The showdown occurred at a closed-door GOP lunch over Cassidy's belief that Trump is mishandling the U.S. war with Iran.

Congressional reporter Mychael Schnell writes via X, “Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) confronted President Trump over the Iran memorandum of understanding, a source familiar with the lunch conversation tells me.”

The day before, Cassidy and three other GOP senators voted alongside democrats to curtail Trump’s war powers. Sources claim that, at the GOP lunch, Trump made remarks about the Senate vote, asking, “'Why would anybody vote for the war powers' resolution?"

Cassidy apparently replied, “‘Is that a rhetorical question or would you like to really know?’”

That's when the yelling match apparently began.

Cassidy told reporters after the event took place, “I stood and said, ‘You have not told the American people what’s going on. It’s lasted four months. Our original objectives have not been achieved, and I want to know what’s going on.'”

The report continues with Cassidy saying: "Trump 'did not particularly care for my comments, raised his voice, I lost my temper…it's the Irish in me,'"

“But again I matched his tone and his volume, and it went back and forth,” Cassidy continued. “So I sat down and tried to de-escalate. I guess my point is, though, that the American people need to know more than we are being told. The Senate needs to know.”

Wednesday’s events mark a continued trend of mounting tension between President Trump and the Louisiana Senator, following Cassidy's Republican primary loss to Trump-backed Julia Letlow. The Louisiana Republican Senate primary runoff election between Letlow and State Treasurer John Fleming is set for Saturday, July 27th.
