The Food and Drug Administration has given “emergency use authorization” to a coronavirus test that can detect results in 45 minutes.
The tests are being manufactured by the California-based company Cepheid and will be shipped out starting next week, according to CNN.
“An accurate test delivered close to the patient can be transformative — and help alleviate the pressure that the emergence of the 2019-nCoV outbreak has put on healthcare facilities that need to properly allocate their respiratory isolation resources,” said Dr. David Persing, Chief Medical and Technology Officer at Cepheid.
“We have developed a test that provides reference lab-quality results in multiple settings where actionable treatment information is needed quickly.”
The news comes as Vice President Pence said he and Second Lady Karen Pence would be taking a coronavirus test after one of his staffers tested positive for COVID-19.
