Five Guys founder and CEO Jerry Murrell distributed approximately $1.5 million in bonuses to frontline employees after a wildly popular buy-one-get-one-free promotion for the chain’s 40th anniversary overwhelmed stores nationwide and created significant operational challenges.

The promotion launched on February 17, 2026, drawing far more customers than anticipated. Sales surged about 130 percent instead of the expected modest increase, leading to long lines, supply shortages at some locations and intense pressure on crews. Murrell later acknowledged the company underestimated demand and fell short of its own standards.

In response, Five Guys issued a public apology and quickly organized a follow-up “40th After Party” BOGO offer from March 9-12, 2026, with better preparation and replenished supplies. The company also rewarded workers who managed the chaos with roughly $1,000 bonuses per impacted store, totaling about $1.5 million across roughly 1,500 U.S. locations.

Murrell emphasized the bonuses recognized the hard work of employees placed in a difficult position. No injuries or safety incidents were reported in connection with the promotion crowds.

The fast-casual burger chain, known for fresh ingredients and made-to-order meals, has hundreds of locations across North Texas, including numerous spots in Dallas, Fort Worth, Denton and surrounding suburbs. Local stores experienced the same high demand and operational strain as the national chain but reported no major community disruptions beyond typical busy-period traffic and wait times.

The episode highlights the challenges of scaling popular limited-time offers in the restaurant industry. Five Guys used the experience to improve planning for the redo promotion, which ran more smoothly according to the company.

Customers in the DFW area who missed the first promotion or encountered issues had another opportunity during the After Party, with the deal available via the Five Guys app or website using a specific code.

The company has not announced further promotions tied to the anniversary but continues to focus on employee support and operational readiness.
