French President Emmanual Macron was slapped in the face during a visit to a village in France on Tuesday.

Macron can be seen getting hit in the face by a man in the crowd during a meet-and-greet.

In the video, which is circulating on social media, the 43-year-old president briskly jogs while wearing a face mask to approach a cheering crowd behind a barrier rail.

Once there, he greets a man also wearing a face mask who, rather than shaking the political leader's hand, swings his open palm on Macron's cheek. The slap can be audibly heard in the clip.

Macron's security personnel swiftly stepped in. Two individuals at the scene were arrested, New York Post reports.

The incident took place in the village of Tain-l’Hermitage in the Drome region, local officials said.

The regional prefecture said the detained individuals were being questioned.

"The man who tried to slap the president and another individual are currently being questioned by the gendarmerie," the prefecture said.

According to the prefecture, Macron entered his car after visiting a high school, before getting out to greet people nearby who were calling out to him.

It was thereupon that the incident occurred.
