An elderly patient received a rousing farewell from staff as she was discharged from the hospital after beating COVID-19 for a second time.
Carmen Hernandez, an 104-year-old woman in Colombia, was applauded by workers as she exited San Rafael de Tunja University Hospital, according to a video by ABC News.
As Hernandez is carried out of the hospital’s exit on a stretcher, staff can be seen gathered outside in a crowd applauding her goodbye.
Hernandez spent 21 days admitted to the hospital as she fought the infectious disease a second time.
The patient was rolled out of the facilities with a special protective zip-lined canopy over her stretcher.
Gina Gomez, a nurse at the hospital, remarked on Hernandez’s remarkable recovery.
“She is an excellent patient with an excellent physical capacity because she resisted the virus for the second time,” Gomez told reporters.
Hernandez’s first run-in with the virus was spent more solitary than her second, Gomez explains.
“The first time she was isolated in her nursing home,” the nurse said. “This time we have the support of the Canelones clinic.”
“Thank God she has done well, and she has beaten the virus,” Gomez added.
