If you’re looking for a hot real estate market this year, you’ll want to head to Florida, according to the most recent “hottest neighborhood” report from real estate site Redfin. If you want a hot market without hot temperatures, you might want to check out Wisconsin or Michigan instead.
All three states had at least two communities that landed on the top 10 list this year. At the top of the list were two Florida towns: Land O’ Lakes in the Tampa Bay and Plant City, both located in the Tampa Bay metro area. Personal finance site WalletHub previously listed Tampa Bay as one of the best cities to start a career in this year.
To determine the hottest neighborhoods in the nation, Redfin looked at zip codes in the 100 most-populous metro areas by year-over-year growth in listing views on Redfin.com and Redfin Compete Score. That score shows how hard it is to win a home in a particular area. Data is from January and February of this year and it was compared against the same timeframe last year.
Zip codes that made the list had 50 or more sales between January 1 and February 28 and had a Redfin Compete Score above 50.
Here’s the top 10 list:
2. Plant City, Fla.
Wisconsin, a midwestern state with significant Great Lakes shoreline, the Green Bay Packers, the Wisconsin Dells, forested areas and more had the highest number of communities on the list. These three are all in the Milwaukee, Wisc., metro area. Two Michigan cities also made the list, as well as a community in the Kansas City, Mo., metro area.
Redfin said this is the second year in a row that the Midwest dominated its hottest neighborhoods list.
“Midwest cities and lesser-known places in Florida are having a moment—and affordability is the reason,” explained Redfin Senior Economist Asad Khan. “Many of these neighborhoods sit just outside major hubs like Milwaukee, Chicago and Tampa, hitting a sweet spot: lower cost of living without giving up access to highly rated schools, shopping and dining. They have the convenience of big cities without the big-city price tags.”
