Hundreds of Firefighters Respond To Massive Parking Garage Fire In Shopping Center

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A number of cars caught fire Monday morning, in the parking garage of the Kings Plaza Shopping Center in Brooklyn.

The fire broke out in a multi-story garage at Avenue U and Flatbush Ave.

Thick smoke overwhelmed the area as calls about the fire started to come in. For a while, it was hard to see the garage because the smoke was so thick.

People tried to figure out what was happening on the second floor.

"All you see is smoke, so you really don't know," Tonya said, "My car's on the first one."

It was a chain of blasts as the fire spread from one car to the next.

"I seen a fireman being carried out on a stretcher," Patricia Donovan said, "It was just horrifying, especially the explosions because the smoke would slow down, and then you would hear a pop, and then you would see the smoke coming out again."

The blaze reached seven alarms before coming under control.

FDNY Commissioner Dan Nigro said an auto dealer had stored up to 120 cars on the second level of the garage, it's not clear how many were destroyed.

The FDNY said victims were being evaluated at the scene. There were 21 firefighters, and three civilians injured.
