Tropical Storm Delta is forecast to become a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico this week.

The current forecast from the National Hurricane Center has New Orleans in the middle of the cone of possible landfall.

Forecasters warn that could change with models spreading anywhere from Texas to the Florida Panhandle.

Hurricane Center Senior Hurricane Specialist Stacy Stewart notes that five day forecasts often have a large margin of error.

"While there is large uncertainty in the track and intensity forecasts at these time ranges, there is a risk of dangerous storm surge, wind, and rainfall hazards along the coast from Louisiana to the western Florida Panhandle," he wrote on the Hurricane Center website. "Residents in these areas should monitor the progress of the system and check for updates to the forecast during the week."

Tropical Storm Delta is forecast to become Hurricane Delta by Wednesday, with a possible landfall in Louisiana Friday.
