McDonald's boasts thousands of locations all over the world.
While some items – like the Big Mac – appease almost every palate no matter the geographical region, you may be surprised that menu options differ from country to country.
What you'll find in your hometown may not be what you'll find internationally in places like Japan, Egypt, or Russia.
The fast food franchise has found plenty of success in tailoring its menu to appeal to diverse tastes and ethnic groups.
Here are some of the most unique menu items found in McDonald's locations worldwide.
Taro Pie
A colorful alternative to the chain's classic apple pie, this purple treat has appeared on the menu in Hong Kong and China, per Insider. The deep-fried delight is filled with the root vegetable taro and a sweet violet-colored filling.
Maharaja Mac
A twist on the Big Mac developed for the chain's customers in India, where the population largely does not eat beef. While it's made with a chicken patty instead of beef, the Maharaja Mac is said to taste pretty similar to the Big Mac.
McSpaghetti
No bells and whistles here. The McSpaghetti is a lot what it sounds like — a simple noodle dish consisting of spaghetti and tomato sauce topped with cheese and served with small pieces of sausage. The item is available on the menu in the Philippines.
Carbonara fries
This offering was introduced to McDonald's menus in Japan and consists of an order of fries that customers top off themselves with a three-cheese sauce infused with bacon and black pepper. See the decadent, interactive treat in action in this Instagram video.
McFalafel
You don't have to be a meat-lover to enjoy the franchise in Egypt or Sweden. The McFalafel features a tortilla that envelops three pieces of falafel topped with tomatoes, lettuce, onions and pickles. And don't forget the tahini sauce for an authentic taste!
McLobster
McDonald's in Maine and other states in New England can occasionally double as a fine dining establishment with the McLobster. The seasonal items include lobster meat in a hot dog but topped with McLobster sauce and shredded lettuce.
Toblerone McFlurry
Oreo and M&M's, make room for Toblerone. Patrons of McDonald's in Denmark and Sweden aren't limited to a few flavors as they can indulge in a McFlurry featuring the iconic nougat and honey-flavored chocolate bar.
McKroket
You'll have to venture to the Netherlands if you want to enjoy a "typical Dutch burger" aka the McKroket. A kroket is a deep fried, breaded crispy patty filled with beef ragout. It's sandwiched between two hamburger buns and topped with a special mustard sauce.
Salmon Beef Burger
I see your Fish Filet and raise you a Salmon Beef Burger. Those looking for surf and turf used to be able to find it on South Korea's menu. The item contained 100% beef and salmon patties and was garnished with lettuce, onion, and tartar sauce. It's since been replaced with a Shrimp Beef Burger.
Bubur Ayam
Congee is a classic Chinese breakfast dish that's gained popularity in other parts of the world including Indonesia and even Europe. McDonald's in Malaysia released its own take on the rice porridge dish with chicken strips, ginger, onion, and chilies.
Idaho Burger
You may be inclined to think that you'll find the Idaho burger in Idaho, but that's where you'd be wrong, my friend. This specific burger is a delicacy in Japan. The burger was released as part of the "USA-inspired burgers collection" and aims to give a taste of America with a beef patty topped with pepper relish, a giant hash brown, bacon, cheddar cheese sauce, and onions.
