Despite being closed for dine-in business, a McDonald's in Oklahoma City was the scene of a shooting that injured multiple employees.
According to police, customer Gloricia Woody was upset when she learned she would not be allowed to eat inside the restaurant because the dining area was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
She reportedly entered the fast food chain and refused to leave despite employee orders. Police say she got into a physical altercation with one of the employees, who eventually succeeded in forcing her out.
However, police say she returned a short time later with a handgun and fired about three rounds inside.
USA Today reports that one employee was hit in the arm by a bullet, while two others were injured with shrapnel.
CNN reports that a fourth worker, who was involved in the initial exchange, somehow suffered a head injury, but it's unclear how.
The 32-year-old only made it a few blocks away before being taken into custody. She was held Wednesday night on preliminary charges of assault and battery with a deadly weapon, according to Oklahoma County jail records.
On Thursday, McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski told ABC News in an interview on "Good Morning America" that the victims were taken to the hospital and were all expected to make a full recovery.
"Obviously it's a heinous crime, particularly because these two people were trying to really support public health," Kempczinski said. "I think what you're seeing in this situation is really what you're seeing in a variety of situations across the country, which is this tension about (re)opening. But there's absolutely no excuse for violence, particularly gun violence. So I'm just happy our people are going to be okay."
Since March, McDonald's has taken "precautionary measures" to keep employees and customers safe amid the coronavirus pandemic. They have shut down all company-owned dining rooms and self-service kiosks and urged franchise owners to do the same. The chain remains open for drive-thru, delivery, and to-go orders.
