Netanyahu shares AI image of nuclear blast over Tel Aviv days before Israeli election

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shared an AI-generated image of a nuclear explosion over Tel Aviv on Sunday, warning that electing a leader who cannot confront Iran could expose the country to a “second Holocaust.” The post came two days before Israel’s national election on Tuesday, October 27.

Netanyahu shared a message from right-wing commentator Yuval Bloomberg that described Iran as a “real and tangible existential threat.” The accompanying text argued that domestic political controversies were a “smokescreen” and that nothing else would matter if Iran obtained nuclear weapons. The image showed a large mushroom cloud rising over a densely populated coastal city consistent with Tel Aviv’s skyline.

Opposition leaders quickly criticized the post. Democrats chairman Yair Golan wrote that Netanyahu had published an image of an atomic bomb over Tel Aviv and said the prime minister and those around him had “lost it.” Former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, who is leading the main opposition challenge, also condemned the move. Netanyahu has long emphasized the Iranian nuclear threat in his campaigns, though he has previously stated that Israel and the United States had set back Iran’s nuclear program.

Polls heading into the election show a close race between Netanyahu’s Likud-led bloc and the opposition, with neither side projected to reach a clear 61-seat majority in the 120-member Knesset. The vote is the first since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks.
