Pantone introduced a new blue shade on Thursday as the Pantone Color of the Year 2022: PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri.
Very Peri is described as "a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone" and has a "courageous presence" that "encourages personal inventiveness and creativity."
The new color "is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through." Pantone aims for it to help people "embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives."
“As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute. “Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.”
Pantone's Color of the Year has been going on for 23 years and has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, industrial design, product packaging, and graphic design. Very Peri will be added into the Pantone Fashion, Home + Interiors Color System, the most widely used and recognized color standards system for fashion, textile, home, and interior design.

Previous Pantone Colors of the Year include PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating in 2021, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue in 2020, and PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral in 2019.
