JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMOX) - The unclaimed property database is known as "Missouri's Largest Lost & Found" and it currently has a number of very special military awards that need to be returned to the rightful owners.

The Missouri State Treasurer announced on Monday that it has more than 200 military medals and insignia in its possession – including five Purple Hearts. And they need help returning them.

The unclaimed property database is a collection of items found inside safe deposit boxes that were turned over to the Missouri State Treasurer. You can see the full listing by clicking on the photo below, which shows some of the current missing medals:

The Treasurer is hoping people can search the list by name for anyone you know. Then contact them, here, to start the process of returning the medals.

The Purple Hearts are listed under the following names:
- ARMSTRONG, CHARLES W
- BERWIN, NORTON C
- VARNEY, MARGARET E
- REABOLD, HELEN

One is also listed as "UNKNOWN."

You may be wondering how all these medals ended up here. They were left inside of safe deposit boxes that have been turned over to the state by financial institutions, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations. The boxes are moved after there has been no document transaction or contact with the owner for five years.

The boxes also sometimes contain family heirlooms, jewelry and other valuable or priceless keepsakes.

The state estimates that one-in-10 Missourians has unclaimed property with an average return of $300. So it might not hurt to sign up for email alerts that will notify you if any unclaimed property with a name similar to yours is turned over to the Missouri State Treasurer’s office.

The Purple Heart medal is given to service members who have been wounded or killed as a result of enemy action while serving in the U.S. military. It means the recipient has greatly sacrificed themselves, or paid the ultimate price, while in the line of duty.
