SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Veterinarians treating an injured golden eagle were surprised to learn from X-rays that the protected bird had been shot.
Initially, vets from the Lindsay Wildlife Experience thought that the eagle found in Pittsburgh had been hit by a car, but tests revealed that a pellet was lodged in the wounded wing.
One worker at the hospital performed surgery and inserted four pins into the eagle's wing to stabilize it.
"It will be a long road to know if she will be able to recover enough to return to the wild," a message from the Lindsay Wildlife Experience said on Facebook.
The female eagle is at least six years old, according to vets.
