President Donald Trump called on the U.S. Department of Justice Saturday to investigate Democrats following the party’s huge wins during the midterms this week.
“The threats being made by the Democrat Party against innocent Republican Donors and Party Members are absolutely unprecedented, and totally illegal.,” said the president in a Truth Social post. “Please report them to the Department of Justice, IMMEDIATELY! If you would like, send them directly to me, your President. These SLEAZEBAGS should go to jail for what they are doing. The Senate must act, and stop being pushed around to the point of the Republican Party losing Elections, and worse! Likewise, the DOJ and House of Representatives.”
Democrats will take over majorities of the House of Representatives and the Senate in January, ending two years of GOP control over the White House and Congress. The Associated Press reported this week that Senior Democrats in both chambers “have vowed to marshal the subpoena powers and larger investigative staffs that come with their soon-to-be majorities,” to probe Trump’s alleged self-enrichment at the public’s expense.
“The Republican president and his White House have long denied any wrongdoing,” the AP noted.
Democrats have already led two impeachments against Trump, and he was acquitted of all counts by the Senate in both cases. Charges brought against Trump did eventually result in him being booked into jail in 2023, but his team made the most of that with mugshot merchandise.
Minority House leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) “has not ruled out trying to impeach Trump for a third time.”
While Democrats will have a majority in the Senate starting next year, they are expected to have 52 seats to Republicans’ 46, according to 270toWin. That’s less than the 67 out of 100 they would need to convict the president of any article of impeachment, if all members of the Senate voted.

In another Saturday Truth Social post, Trump alleged that “Democrats are going around threatening a lot of people, including the Attorney General of the United States, and others, with Impeachment and many other forms of punishment,” referring to Attorney General Todd Blanche. Trump went on to say that “there have been no impeachable acts committed, or even thought of, by the victims of this illegal process,” and likened the threats to “extortion.”
However, POLITICO reported that “Trump’s characterization of the Democrats’ actions and statements as ‘extortion’ misrepresents what lawmakers have actually said,” and noted that Democrats have only said they plan to investigate at this point. POLITICO said the DOJ “did not respond to a request for additional information on its plans to implement the president’s call to action.”
