High-profile accounts on Twitter are losing a mass number of followers as users begin to deactivate their accounts following the company announcing its sale to Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
The company shared on Tuesday that the "fluctuations in follower counts" were not anything from its end but instead "organic" from account closures, Fortune reported.
Twitter has not specified the number of accounts shut down or activated, but it did say it was looking into the "fluctuations," NBC News reported.
The accounts that lost followers include the top followed former President Barack Obama, who saw a drop of more than 300,000 followers, and Katy Perry, who lost more than 200,000.
However, some accounts have seen an increase in followers, specifically those who align conservatively like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
For example, Greene had 539,000 followers before, and 632,000 followers after Twitter announced Musk's purchase.
Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz tweeted about the follower swing for Republicans as well, as it was noticed by many with the GOP.
"It really is something how conservative accounts are getting massive follower increases today," Gaetz tweeted.
Twitter said in a statement that it is not letting spam accounts take over, and if they find any evidence that is what's happening, they will take action.
"While we continue to take action on accounts that violate our spam policy which can affect follower counts, these fluctuations appear to largely be a result of an increase in new account creation and deactivation," Twitter said in a statement.
