A medical transport plane traveling from Bermuda to Boston, Mass., with six people on board went missing as of early Saturday morning, and the U.S. Coast Guard Northeast District was searching for it.
According to a press release from the Coast Guard, the Federal Aviation Administration said that it had lost contact with the aircraft, a Gulfstream G100 with tail number C-GRJP and contacted the guard at around 2 a.m. Saturday. Coast Guard crews are looking for the plane off the coast of Nantucket, Mass.
Coast Guard assets responding include: a HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, a HC-130 Hercules crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Brant Point and Coast Guard Cutter William Sparling, a Boston-based Fast Response Cutter.
“The search remains ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available,” the Coast Guard said Saturday.
Conditions in the Atlantic off the U.S. coastline have a reputation for being difficult for travelers. For example, there are stories about the Bermuda triangle, an area between the U.S. and the island notorious for alleged disappearances.
“Some speculate that unknown and mysterious forces account for the unexplained disappearances, such as extraterrestrials capturing humans for study; the influence of the lost continent of Atlantis; vortices that suck objects into other dimensions; and other whimsical ideas,” said the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “Some explanations are more grounded in science, if not in evidence.”
Further north, near the Massachusetts coast that the Coast Guard is currently searching for the missing medical transport, John F. Kennedy Jr. died in a 1999 plane crash along with his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her sister Lauren Bessette. Their remains were found off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. Even further north is the shipwreck site of the RMS Titanic that sank after crashing into an iceberg in 1912 and the location where the Titan submersible imploded while visiting the wreckage in 2023.
