Health officials reported that a 78-year-old woman died shortly after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine in Los Angeles, California.
According to NBC News, there was no evidence that the vaccine was the cause of her death.
Dr. Michael E. Morris, director of Kaiser Permanente Southern California’s vaccination program, said that the patient’s family confirmed that their loved one had a heart illness history.
On Friday, Dr. Morris shared that the woman “passed away unexpectedly” after receiving Pfizer’s version of the vaccine.
“While seated in the observation area after the injection, the patient complained of feeling discomfort and while being evaluated by medical personnel, she lost consciousness,” Morris said. “Paramedics on scene began CPR almost immediately and continued, but she ultimately could not be revived.”
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported that the cause of death has yet to be confirmed. However, officials say that they were no signs of anaphylactic or allergic reactions. The department said her death is most likely not related to the vaccine.
The woman’s husband of more than 50 years also received his vaccination.
“Despite this tragedy, he is still urging that the COVID-19 vaccination effort continue, and said he intends to receive his second dose of vaccine in a few weeks,” Morris said.
This isn’t the first time a person has died after receiving their vaccine.
Last month, The Orange County coroner investigated the death of a Santa Ana healthcare worker after receiving his second dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
Tim Zook, 60, an X-Ray tech at at South Coast Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, had an upset stomach and problems breathing before going to the hospital.
A spokesman for Pfizer-BioNTech told the OC Register that the company is "aware of Zook’s death and is thoroughly reviewing the matter.”
“Our immediate thoughts are with the bereaved family,” the company said in an emailed statement to the OC Register. “We closely monitor all such events and collect relevant information to share with global regulatory authorities. Based on ongoing safety reviews performed by Pfizer, BioNTech and health authorities, (the vaccine) retains a positive benefit-risk profile for the prevention of COVID-19 infections. Serious adverse events, including deaths that are unrelated to the vaccine, are unfortunately likely to occur at a similar rate as they would in the general population.”
