Christian McCaffrey is heading back to the Bay Area.

The 49ers acquired McCaffrey in a trade with the Panthers on Thursday night, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. San Francisco is sending 2023 second-, third- and fourth-round picks in the trade, as well as a 2024 fifth.
After the Panthers fired head coach Matt Rhule, chatter began suggesting Carolina might be willing to move some of their top players, including the star running back.
Right from the jump, the 49ers were pointed to as a potential match. With an offense that relies heavily on the ground game, San Francisco lost top back Elijah Mitchell to a sprained MCL in Week 1, and he remains on IR.
Now, the 49ers get to add the top dual-threat back in the league to an offense that already boasts a solid collection of skill players.
