Everybody and their mother is under the impression that the New York Jets will draft BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft next week.
Well, maybe not everybody.
According to NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, at least one team is not so sure that the Jets will absolutely take Wilson.
La Canfora spoke with an anonymous “longtime AFC executive” who casted doubt that Wilson is a sure-thing as the No. 2 pick.
“Are we all sure that Wilson is going second?” he said. “Is that written in stone somewhere? Maybe Wilson is the pick, but you can’t tell me he is absolutely a better prospect than Fields. We would take Fields there at 2. What if they do take Fields? Then San Francisco takes Wilson. Then New England comes up to4 and gets Jones. There’s no way that could happen?”
While it seems unlikely, until the Jets submit their pick on Thursday night they could change their minds — which, by all reports, suggest that Wilson is their guy.
The Jets were in attendance for Fields’ second pro day workout, however, likely doing their due diligence on the top quarterback prospects.
Of course, by doing that, perhaps they are beginning to have second thoughts.
There have been no reports to suggest the Jets are shying away from Wilson, and his quarterback coach recently spoke to Peter King as if Wilson to the Jets is essentially a lock.
With the draft nearly a week away, it is hard to sift through the noise and decipher what is real and what is misdirection as teams are often trying to throw others off their scent.
There’s been plenty of surprises before, so anything is possible and it is certainly an intriguing thought: is Zach Wilson really the next-best quarterback in this class?
