Are Cowboys fans being too critical of Dak Prescott in return from injury?

Dak Prescott made his return from injury this week and the Cowboys cruised to a 24-6 win against the Lions. The defense was outstanding once again, aided by Detroit missing some weapons, but they still limited the Lions to just two first-half field goals in the game.

Prescott was solid in his return as well. He was 19-for-25 for 207 yards and a touchdown while being sacked twice. It wasn’t anything spectacular, but he led his team to a win.

Bobby Belt and Bryan Broaddus of the Audacy Original Podcast “Love of the Star” talked about Prescott’s performance in his return which has drawn some criticism from fans.

“I have to fight the fight on social media all the time. I was literally having people talk about what an awful performance Dak put up,” Belt said (4:50 in player above). “But it’s like look, whether he was totally sharp or not – which he wasn’t –, I think it’s funny to look at a guy who had six incompletions on 25 attempts and didn’t throw an interception, had a passer rating of 113 and say he was awful. To me, this was better than any game Cooper Rush played and we still were critical of it.”

Head coach Mike McCarthy said after the game that Prescott didn’t see any live action during the week so some bumps in the road shouldn’t be too concerning.

“But overall, I think that Mike McCarthy’s got it there,” Belt continued. “There’s going to be a little bit of rust you’re knocking off. You’re still going to try to get into your rhythm a little bit. And I think Chicago will be better than this Detroit game, and I think Green Bay will be better than Chicago, and by the time we get to Minnesota I think you’ll see alright, Dak’s got his rhythm back and then this is what we’re looking at here.”

Rush kept the Cowboys in contention in the NFC East and Prescott will look to continue that. They have two games against sub-.500 opponents before that Vikings game.

“If you’re a fan and you want to be critical of Dak Prescott’s way he played, Mike McCarthy told you that they really didn’t practice very much this week,” Broaddus said. “Could Dak Prescott have played better? Yes. Is he going to need to play better? Yes. Does he give you more opportunity than what Cooper Rush was showing? Yes. Did he get the same results as Cooper Rush? Yes, they got a win. That’s all that matters right now.”

Broaddus also pointed out that you were able to see things progress a little bit as the game went on. You could see it and the numbers backed that up.

“We’re talking about in the second half he was 10 of 11,” Belt said. “He was damn near perfect on his completion percentage in the second half.”

Prescott and the Cowboys will look to build on that second half when they host the Bears on Sunday.
