LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) — Bears running back David Montgomery departed practice early Wednesday morning with a groin injury.
Montgomery suffered the injury during a handoff on in a non-contact drill as his left leg slipped and he fell to the ground. He was in pain and had a noticeable limp as he walked off, then was carted away from the practice field. The severity of Montgomery's injury wasn't immediately known, coach Matt Nagy said after practice.
Montgomery was set to undergo further testing.
"We don’t know," Nagy said after practice Wednesday. "You try to stay as positive as you can. You don’t know, really, what the answer is and where things are at.
"We talk about contingency. This is the year of the contingency."
Montgomery rushed for 889 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie last season. He averaged 3.7 yards per carry.
Montgomery is set to be the Bears' feature back this season. Tarik Cohen, Ryan Nall and Cordarrelle Patterson are behind him on the running back depth chart.
The Bears hold practice again Thursday morning at Halas Hall. Chicago opens its regular season at Detroit on Sept. 13.
