Angels vs Astros
The Los Angeles Angels are in a state of desperation as they begin a three-game series with the Houston Astros on Friday. Despite making bold moves at the trade deadline, the Angels have fallen back to .500 after losing seven in a row at the beginning of August. They need to start stringing wins together and will ask Reid Detmers to help in Friday’s game in Houston. Of course, Detmers is just 2-8 with a 4.78 ERA on the season. The young lefty pitched to a 6.12 ERA in July and gave up seven runs over four innings in his first start in August. The Angels have now lost four of his last five starts. To make matters worse, the Astros will send Justin Verlander to the mound on Friday night. Verlander allowed two runs over seven innings against the Yankees in his first start since being traded back to Houston at the deadline. Across his last four starts, Verlander has conceded just four runs on 17 hits across 26.1 innings. With Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon still missing from the Los Angeles lineup, the Astros are well-positioned to take Friday’s series opener from the struggling Angels.
