(WEEI) -- With Antonio Brown out of the picture and Julian Edelman getting injured during the first half of the New England Patriots' 30-14 win over the New York Jets Sunday, more was put on the plate of Josh Gordon.
The wide receiver displayed tremendous toughness battling through a few injuries and had one of his better games, finishing with six catches on 11 targets for 83 yards.
Appearing on Ordway, Merloni & Fauria Monday, Bill Belichick praised Gordon.
"I think Josh has had a consistent year for us," he said. "Started late, mid-August, but he's been pretty consistent on a daily basis and in the games that he's played in from the Giants preseason game through three regular-season games. Just going out there every day working on his timing, working on his individual fundamentals, in-game conditioning and so forth.
"I thought that showed up the last couple of weeks. It was hot in Miami and was challenging yesterday with the heat and there were a number of snaps and so forth. He's doing a good job."
If Edelman is out for any extended period of time, Gordon's workload will certainly increase.
On a separate note, Stephen Gostkowski missed another kick in Sunday's game. It was his fourth in his last two games, but Belichick remains confident in his kicker.
"Honestly, I think Steve has hit the ball well," he said. "I watch him every day in practice. Kickoffs, he's hit the ball extremely well all year. He had a couple I am sure he'd like to have back that I think he'll make going forward. Hopefully that will be the case. I think overall his consistency and the operation, his accuracy really has been good. I understand we've had a couple of missed kicks in games, I see that, but on a day-to-day basis you don't see that very often."
Another player who Belichick backed was rookie Gunner Olszewski, who muffed a punt and allowed the Jets to score their first touchdown.
"I feel like Gunner has good hands," Belichick said. "He's handled the ball very well for us. Look, we can't afford many of those at any position, but I have confidence in him. I think the entire team does. He's handled the ball well in practice, in preseason games and the regular season. Look, we're all going to have those plays. Hopefully we can get past them and move on."
