Bob Costas First Pitch To Ozzie Smith Was Nearly A Disaster

ST. LOUIS (KMOX.com) -- In June, Bob Costas was honored at Busch Stadium as he would soon be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame for being named the Ford C. Frick Award winner this year.

He was asked and accepted the opportunity to throw a ceremonial first pitch, which nearly became a disaster if it wasn't for another Hall of Famer.

Costas was a studio guest Thursday on "The Charlie Brennan Show," and he told the story of how former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Ozzie Smith saved him from a lot of embarrassment.

The only thing smoother than the save by Smith, might have been what he told Costas after the throw.

"Luckily in his early 60's he still has the reflexes, otherwise this could have been disastrous," Costas said. "And as I walked toward him and shook his hand and smiled, he says, 'That's what I do.'"
