Jimmy Garropolo’s future still remains in limbo with the preseason beginning to wrap up, but Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre has one idea on what the San Francisco 49ers can do with him:

Start him.

Favre, in an interview with The 33rd Team on Monday, argued that Garropolo was more deserving of the starting quarterback job than Trey Lance.

“My personal opinion, I would go with Garoppolo,” Favre said (h/t NBC Sports). “He’s not as flashy — not near as flashy. He wasn’t their first-round pick, and no offense towards trey Lance, but what Jimmy has done is win. And win, win, win.”

Garoppolo indeed has a 33-14 career record as a starter, but he has been marred by inconsistent play and used most of the time as a game manager-type quarterback.

Yet, he’s been under center for a Super Bowl and got them to the NFC Championship last season, which Favre weighs heavily.

“Again, not flashy so it’s not the glamorous pick,” he continued. “But my goodness, the guy has won and put them in a position to go or compete for the Super Bowl year in and you out and deserves the right to keep playing.”

The Niners entered camp committed to Lance as the starter and Garoppolo seemed destined to be traded, although nothing has materialized on that front.

While Lance had his ups and downs during his rookie season, he brings mobility that Garoppolo lacks and many believe has a stronger arm than the 30-year-old veteran.

Favre understands the potential Lance brings, but remains in Garoppolo’s corner.

“There’s a tremendous upside with Trey, there’s no question about it,” Favre said. “But Jimmy G has been a proven winner…Oftentimes, that gets overlooked: Is a guy a winner? And Garoppolo is definitely a winner.”
