The Dallas Cowboys are just days away from their first preseason game but still don’t have star offensive guard Zack Martin in training camp.
Martin became the highest-paid guard in the league with his six-year, $84 million extension in 2018. However, that’s no longer the case with Martin now the eighth highest-paid guard in the league.
The 32-year-old guard is being fined $50,000 per day, which has now added up to $600,000 – and there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight.
Bobby Belt and Bryan Broaddus of Audacy’s original podcast “Love of the Star” talked about Martin’s holdout as both hosts didn’t realize how dug in the two sides are.
“I felt like Zack Martin didn’t want to get fined $50,000 a day,” Broaddus said (5:30 in player above). “The Cowboys – I know you’re running into the same people I am at camp – they’re dug in. They’re really dug in on this one.
Initially, Belt and Broaddus thought that Martin’s holdout would be a short one and the two sides could come to an agreement. That isn’t the case.
“I felt like there would be some type of compromise,” Broaddus continued. “Maybe there still will be a compromise but man, the more I talk to people out there, the more it was like ‘No, there are things we got to do and we’ll go from that.’”
“My anticipation was we’d have a deal done before we left on Friday the 4th, and that didn’t happen,” Belt said.
“I didn’t realize how dug in he was,” Broaddus interjected.
“Or how much they were,” Belt exclaimed. “I didn’t realize either side was as dug in as they were.”
With Martin and the Cowboys unwilling to budge, Dallas’ offensive line depth will be under the microscope in the coming weeks leading up to their opening game against the New York Giants.
