Injuries hit the 49ers hard this season, especially at the quarterback position, but San Francisco is right in the middle of things as the playoffs begin.
Trey Lance gave way to Jimmy Garoppolo after a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. Garoppolo then went down in Week 13 and many thought that the 49ers’ Super Bowl hopes would go down with him.
Enter Brock Purdy.
Purdy, who the 49ers selected with the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, has yet to lose a game and he’s put up some pretty impressive numbers through his first six games – and five starts. Mr. Irrelevant threw for 13 touchdowns and just four interceptions while completing 67% of his passes for a total of 1,374 yards.
Danny Parkins and Andrew Fillipponi of the Audacy Original Podcast “1st & Pod” talked about the 49ers’ Super Bowl chances and if Purdy could go from Mr. Irrelevant to Super Bowl MVP.
“The Niners have won 10 straight. Brock Purdy had three touchdowns (on Sunday), hung another huge number on the board,” Parkins said (11:01 in player above). “Are you prepared to say that Brock Purdy can win the Super Bowl?”
“Oh man, I resisted this notion for the longest time but I think I’m going to say yes now,” Fillipponi said. “I think I’m going to say yes.”
“I think you have to,” Parkins said. “It’s not a particularly impressive win streak … but there’s not a tier-one Super Bowl contender – couple playoff teams – but the last time they played a tier-one team, they played the Chiefs, they lost – and they lost handily.”
The 49ers haven’t lost since a 44-23 defeat at the hands of the Chiefs in Week 7. They’ve strung 10 straight wins together as we enter the playoffs and are neck-and-neck with the Eagles in the NFC playoff odds.
“The only argument you have is they haven’t really been tested and when they get tested it’s going to be on the road across the country in Philly. So that’s a real tough spot. But 10 straight is 10 straight, man,” Parkins continued. “I think we have to say that Brock Purdy could be Super Bowl MVP because if you’re the quarterback of a team that’s in the Super Bowl you could win MVP. I feel like Brock Purdy could go from Mr. Irrelevant to Super Bowl MVP. I do.”
San Francisco is currently around +500 to win the Super Bowl at sportsbooks across the board. Some books even have Super Bowl MVP odds out and the 49ers quarterback is only behind Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Jalen Hurts in that market. He’s right there with Joe Burrow and ahead of Dak Prescott.
Purdy and the 49ers will look to keep this Cinderella story going as they host the Seattle Seahawks as 10-point favorites on Saturday afternoon.
