(670 The Score) Cubs starter Yu Darvish underwent an arthroscopic debridement on his right elbow on Wednesday, the team announced before its game with the Brewers at Wrigley Field.
The procedure on Darvish's throwing arm was done as part of a second opinion conducted by Dr. James Andrews, who recommended the cleanup of his elbow as part of his recovery process. The Cubs expect that Darvish will be ready for spring training in 2019.
Signed to a six-year, $126-million deal, Darvish started just eight games in 2018, going 1-4 with a 4.95 ERA during his first season with the Cubs. He was placed on the disabled list in late May and after two failed attempts to return was shut down for the season.
The Cubs have bridged the gap without Darvish with the acquisition of Cole Hamels in a July deal with the Rangers. Hamels has gone 4-0 with a 1.42 ERA with the Cubs. Mike Montgomery has also filled in for Darvish, going 4-5 with a 3.85 ERA in 34 appearances and 15 starts this season.
The Cubs host the Brewers on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. CT in the rubber match of a three-game set with their division rivals. Kyle Hendricks starts for the Cubs.
