ARLINGTON -- Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse for the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. It did.

Following the Cowboys 19-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed that quarterback Dak Prescott will need surgery on his thumb, and will miss several weeks.

According to sources close to Todd Archer of ESPN, Prescott "will have a pin and plate inserted to stabilize the joint," and will miss 6-8 weeks. Archer went on to report that the quarterback will likely be placed on injured reserve and the earliest he could possibly return will be on Oct. 30 against the Chicago Bears. Should he not return then, the Cowboys have their bye the following week, and face the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 13.

Prescott was injured in the final minutes of the fourth quarter on a pass attempt. Replay video showed the quarterback's hand going forward right into the arm of Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett.

Prescott was seen being examined by the team's training staff on the sidelines before he ran off the field and into the locker room.

When speaking with reporters after the game, Prescott said he thought he had jammed his thumb, but realized something was off when he couldn't grip the football.

If there's any silver lining to the news that Prescott will miss the next several weeks it might be this.

"I was told (the break) was a lot cleaner than it could have been," the quarterback said, while adding that he'll have surgery on Monday.

"It’s very disappointing, but injuries happen. Can’t necessarily control it," Prescott continued. "It’s unfortunate, but I’ll do what I’ve always done anytime adversity comes. Take it on head-first and I’ll give my best, and I’m sure I’ll come out of this better.

Cooper Rush entered the game at quarterback in the final minutes and will be the starting quarterback moving forward.
