Darvish Undergoes Surgery, Morrow On The Mend

CHICAGO (670 The Score) -- The Chicago Cubs announced that starting pitcher Yu Darvish had arthroscopic surgery on his right arm to repair a debridement in the right elbow area.

Darvish missed the entire season after winning his only game on May 20. He tried twice to come back from the injury with rehab starts in June and August. Both times, Darvish complained of pain in the elbow area. He was shut down for the season after his last attempt to come back in August.

The 32-year-old pitcher made eight starts in the regular season. He had a 1-3 record with a 4.95 ERA. Dr. Scott Meister performed the surgery in Dallas, Texas. The surgery is not considered a major repair, rather a cleanup of debris in the elbow.

Darvish signed a six-year $126 million contract in February with Chicago. Darvish is expected to be ready for spring training 2019.

Morrow on the way back

Closer Brandon Morrow threw 35 pitches in his second side session this last week. The veteran pitcher has been on the shelf with a right biceps injury since July 18.

Morrow told me that he felt some discomfort but no pain in the elbow while throwing his bullpen session. The plan, according to the pitcher, is to schedule a sim game in a few days and proceed back to the team before the end of the month.

Morrow made good on 22 of 24 save opportunities before getting injured.

"I felt good out there and really let some pitches go a the end," Morrow said. "I know I was 90-plus on a few of them."

Morrow is not sure how he will be used or exactly when he will be bullpen ready.

Schwarber staying back from Washington

Cubs left fielder Kyle Schwarber has been sidelined since Saturday with back tightness. The team's trainers have been treating the outfielder with various applications. He is expected to miss at least a few more games.

Manager Joe Maddon said Schwarber will not travel to Washington, D.C., for the Cubs' makeup game with the Nationals on Thursday.
