Dirk Nowitzki made his broadcasting debut during a guest appearance alongside the Mavericks' Bally Sports Southwest team and personally, did a very great job, cracking a lot of jokes along the way.
One of the jokes Dirk cracked, was in response to Timberwolves star Karl- Anthony Towns assertion that he is the 'greatest big man shooter of all time.' Towns, who had a stellar stat line, recording 26 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 blocks, hit a stepback three-pointer only a few minutes into the game and after admiring the shot, Dirk then jokingly says, 'That's the best shooting big man in the world!'
Here's a clip of Dirk's response to Towns' three-ball:
To be fair, Towns would be in the same category as Nowitzki if we were to strictly go by positions. Even though Dirk is listed as a power forward, he played center for many stretches during his career and if we were to account for the eras, Dirk played in a more physical era, compared to the one Towns plays in the three-point friendly league we find ourselves in today. Nowitzki started in the late 90s and still has 3.4 attempts per game from downtown to KAT’s four. What would be tougher for KAT? Trying to hurdle Dirk's career point mark.
Despite throwing a little shade towards Towns, Dirk said one day he will be up there amongst the greats in NBA history.
The Mavs ended up beating the Wolves 114-102 in Dirk's guest analyst appearance. Maybe Dirk has a future as a broadcaster. I know I would be here for it. Here are some more highlights from the Mavericks legend's broadcasting debut.
