Eagles won't be able to wear Kelly Green until 2023

The door is now open for the Philadelphia Eagles to wear their Kelly Green uniforms and helmets in 2022, but it may be another year before the beloved jerseys return to Lincoln Financial Field.

Yes, teams will be allowed to use a second helmet beginning next season, which could allow for the return of a uniform that is a different shade than the team's primary helmet. But Brian McCarthy from the NFL's public relations department noted that in order for a team to wear an alternate helmet in the 2022 season, they'll have to submit it to the league by July 31 of 2021.

Rob Tornoe of The Philadelphia Inquirer now reports that the Eagles "have already submitted their black jersey as their alternate uniform in 2022." It appears then that the Kelly Green throwbacks won't be used at any point in either of the next two seasons, perhaps setting the stage for a return as an alternate in 2023.

The Kelly Green uniforms were last seen in Week 1 of the 2010 season, as the Eagles celebrated the 50th anniversary of their 1960 NFL Championship Game victory over the Green Bay Packers:

It may take the Eagles (and Nike) until 2023 to refine a new Kelly Green alternate, assuming they don't plan to use these exact ones again.
