As the Atlanta Braves attempt to win their fourth consecutive National League East title, they're also trying to assure that reigning NL MVP Freddie Freeman doesn't depart the team after the season.

With that said, Audacy MLB Insider Jon Heyman says that while Freeman's camp has had discussions with Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos, a new contract doesn't appear to be imminent. And with that, Freeman may very well reach the free agent market this offseason for the first time in his career:

Freeman -- who will turn 32 this weekend -- is slashing .291/.388/.497 with 28 home runs, 73 RBIs and a 3.7 fWAR in 2021. A repeat as NL MVP is unlikely, but Freeman figures to finish in the top 10 in voting for the award for the sixth time in his career.

Heyman added that while it isn't clear what each of the two sides believe would be a fair pact, the five-year/$130 million deal that Paul Goldschmidt signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in March of 2019 could be an interesting comp.

We recently ranked Freeman as the No. 5 potential free agent this offseason, though it's possible potential suitors may be hesitant to invest a ton of time in trying to sign the five-time All-Star if they think he's still overwhelmingly likely to return to the Braves. Freeman will almost certainly have a qualifying offer attached to him as well.
