Top 10 MLB left fielders for 2023 season
Ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball season, here are Audacy Sports' rankings of the top 10 left fielders in baseball right now:

10. Ian Happ, Chicago Cubs
Ranking Last Year: Not Ranked
2022 Statistics: .271/.342/.440 with 17 home runs, 72 RBIs, 58 walks, .781 OPS, 13 defensive runs saved, one out above average and a 3.5 WAR
Age During 2023 Season: 28
A former first-round pick, Happ is coming off of the finest season of his career, as he was an All-Star and captured his first Gold Glove Award in 2022. As he enters a contract season, Happ could set himself up for a lucrative multi-year deal if he produces at a similar level for the Cubs in 2023.

9. Christian Yelich, Milwaukee Brewers
Ranking Last Year: 8
2022 Statistics: .252/.355/.383 with 14 home runs, 57 RBIs, 88 walks, .738 OPS, -2 defensive runs saved, -4 outs above average and a 2.3 WAR
Age During 2023 Season: 31
Yelich has never matched the Hall of Fame-caliber production that he put up between the 2018 and 2019 seasons, when he won NL MVP and finished as the runner-up for the honor in the next season. But while Yelich perhaps hasn't performed up to the level that the Brewers expected when they gave him a seven-year/$188.5 million deal, he has still posted a .358 on-base percentage over the last three seasons. There's value in the player that Yelich is now, just not nearly as much as what he was in his first two seasons with the Brewers.

8. Kris Bryant, Colorado Rockies
Ranking Last Year: 3
2022 Statistics: .306/.376/.475 with five home runs, 14 RBIs, 17 walks, .851 OPS, -5 defensive runs saved, -2 outs above average and a 0.6 WAR
Age During 2023 Season: 31
Injuries essentially turned the first year of Bryant's seven-year/$182 million deal into a wash, as he was limited to just 42 games in his debut campaign with the Rockies. The good news is that when Bryant played, he was productive and he's only two years removed from an excellent 2021 season. If healthy, the former NL MVP should re-emerge as one of baseball's best Swiss Army knives.

7. Randy Arozarena, Tampa Bay Rays
Ranking Last Year: 5
2022 Statistics: .263/.327/.445 with 20 home runs, 89 RBIs, 46 walks, .773 OPS, -4 defensive runs saved, -2 outs above average and a 2.7 WAR
Age During 2023 Season: 28
Arozarena will likely never be hotter than when he homered 10 times during a run to the World Series for the Rays in 2020, but he's become a very good player nonetheless. Among qualified left fielders -- which doesn't include some of the names above him on this list -- Arozarena is second in WAR (6.5) since the start of the 2021 regular season, per FanGraphs.

6. Steven Kwan, Cleveland Guardians
Ranking Last Year: Not Ranked
2022 Statistics: .298/.373/.400 with six home runs, 52 RBIs, 62 walks, .772 OPS, 21 defensive runs saved, 10 outs above average and a 4.4 WAR
Age During 2023 Season: 25
Something of a throwback, Kwan was a very valuable player in 2022, despite not being much of a threat to hit the ball out of the park. Kwan's 21 defensive runs saved were third among all defenders in 2022, and his .373 on-base percentage made him an ideal table-setter for Terry Francona and the Guardians.

5. Taylor Ward, Los Angeles Angels
Ranking Last Year: Not Ranked
2022 Statistics: .281/.360/.473 with 23 home runs, 65 RBIs, 60 walks, .833 OPS, -3 defensive runs saved (in RF), two outs above average (in RF) and a 3.8 WAR
Age During 2023 Season: 29
It's better to reach your potential later than never. A first-round pick in 2015, Ward performed at an All-Star caliber in 2022, playing over 100 games for the first time in his career. For a franchise in the Angels that hasn't caught many breaks in recent years, Ward emerging as a productive player was a nice development. With the offseason addition of Hunter Renfroe, Ward will likely move from right to left field in 2023.

4. Daulton Varsho, Toronto Blue Jays
Ranking Last Year: Not Ranked
2022 Statistics: .235/.302/.443 with 27 home runs, 74 RBIs, 46 walks, .745 OPS, four defensive runs saved, two outs above average and a 4.6 WAR
Age During 2023 Season: 26
A rare outfielder/catcher, Varsho was one of the best-kept secrets in baseball during three seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Acquired in a December trade by the Blue Jays, Varsho will join an already deep line that includes the likes of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer, Alejandro Kirk and Bo Bichette. And the Blue Jays will have four seasons from Varsho before he can become a free agent.

3. Tyler O'Neill, St. Louis Cardinals
Ranking Last Year: 1
2022 Statistics: .228/.308/.392 with 14 home runs, 58 RBIs, 38 walks, .700 OPS, one defensive run saved, two outs above average and a 1.3 WAR
Age During 2023 Season: 28
O'Neill played like a star in 2021, winning his second consecutive Gold Glove Award and finishing eighth in NL MVP Award voting. Unfortunately for him and the Cardinals, injuries limited O'Neill to just 96 games in 2022. If healthy in 2023, O'Neill may very well make his first career All-Star Game appearance.

2. Kyle Schwarber, Philadelphia Phillies
Ranking Last Year: 4
2022 Statistics: .218/.323/.504 with 46 home runs, 94 RBIs, 86 walks, .827 OPS, -14 defensive runs saved, -13 outs above average and a 2.6 WAR
Age During 2023 Season: 30
Yes, Schwarber struck out 200 times and graded out poorly defensively in his first season with the Phillies. He also led the senior circuit with 46 home runs, and hit another six in a shocking World Series run by the Phillies. He may be an all-or-nothing hitter, but he provides tremendous leadership and enough home runs that his four-year/$79 million deal feels like a bargain.

1. Yordan Álvarez, Houston Astros
Ranking Last Year: Not Ranked In LF
2022 Statistics: .306/.406/.613 with 37 home runs, 97 RBIs, 78 walks, 1.019 OPS, five defensive runs saved, -5 outs above average and a 6.6 WAR
Age During 2023 Season: 26
One of the best left-handed hitters in baseball currently, Álvarez essentially clinched a World Series title for the Astros in 2022 with a titanic home run off of José Alvarado in Game 6 of the World Series. Álvarez will likely never hit a bigger home run, but hundreds of longballs are in the future of the slugger, who is a Hall of Fame-caliber talent.
