Looks like the Yankees might need some emergency infield depth early in 2021, as the team made this announcement about Gio Urshela late Friday:

INF Gio Urshela underwent surgery today to remove a bone chip from his right elbow. The procedure was performed by Yankees Head Team Physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and went as expected. Urshela’s anticipated recovery time from surgery is three months.

Urshela, who burst onto the scene with an out-of-nowhere .314/.355/.534 slash line and 21 home runs in 2019, played 42 games for the Yankees last season and hit .298 with six homers, entrenching himself as the starting third baseman.

He did, however, miss a couple games in August when the bone chip first flared up, and then missed 11 games in September when the issue sent him to the injured list. It came at an inopportune time, as Urshela had a four-game hit streak going when he went on the IL, but he turned it into an eventual 13-game streak when he returned, and his average jumped 60 points from August 31 to September 27.

Urshela was upbeat about the surgery, though, posting this to his Instagram:

The Yankees of course still have Miguel Andujar to play third base if Urshela’s rehab goes longer than expected, but may now be even more pressed to re-sign DJ LeMahieu as well.
