Tony Gonzalez: Patrick Mahomes is on his way to becoming best QB ever

Patrick Mahomes didn’t wait long to refresh everyone’s memory on how gifted he is.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback lit up the Cardinals defense wire-to-wire in Sunday’s 44-21 drubbing of Arizona. Mahomes threw five touchdowns to four different receivers, finishing 30-of-39 for 360 yards in the air with no interceptions.

It was vintage Mahomes, something that’s even more impressive when you consider he lost Tyreek Hill over the offseason and is working with a handful of new faces at receiver.

Chiefs legend Tony Gonzalez told “Cody and Gold” that it’s just the latest example of greatness from Mahomes.

“I think Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid after yesterday’s performance – and it’s one game, it’s one game – but those guys are two of the best to ever do it,” Gonzalez said. “I know Patrick is young, but as of right now you can already say he’s one of the best quarterbacks to ever play this game, and he’s on his way to being the best to ever do it.”

Of course, more than a few Patriots fans might disagree with the notion that someone could supplant Tom Brady as the greatest ever at the position. Mahomes has a long way to go in terms of accolades and, above all else, Super Bowl titles, but few at the position have ever boasted the consistent elite level of play that Mahomes has thus far in his career. If anyone can catch Brady, it's him.

So, yes, time will tell, but Gonzalez probably isn’t alone in thinking Mahomes has the potential to reach that level of stardom.
