BOSTON (WEEI.com) -- The Greg Schiano era has ended in New England before it really officially began.
Schiano announced he's stepping down from his position with the Patriots. It was never officially announced, but it was assumed he would be the defensive coordinator.
"I have informed Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick that I am stepping down from my position at the Patriots," Schiano said in a statement. "This is not the result of any one event, but rather a realization that I need to spend more time on my faith and family. I don't want to look back years from now and wish I had done things differently. Therefore, I am taking time away from the game to recalibrate my priorities."
Bill Belichick is on board with the decision.
"I respect Coach Schiano greatly and appreciate his contributions to our staff and team," he said. "He is a friend who we support completely."
The Patriots now need to find a defensive coordinator, though at this point Belichick may serve in that role in addition to head coach given the time of year.
