The future of the quarterback position for the Chicago Bears seemingly won't fall into the hands of their first-round draft pick immediately. Despite trading up and using a premier selection on Ohio State graduate Justin Fields in the draft, the Bears are reportedly going to opt for a veteran starter when the season gets underway against the Rams.
According to what a source told Mike Florio, Chicago has "already promised quarterback Andy Dalton that he will start the season as the starting quarterback," and so Fields will begin on the bench. But even if he has to wait a little while than he may prefer to make his first on-field appearance with his new team, he's already ahead of the game in developing a good Bears mentality.
In a video clip from "1920 Football Drive," Fields is asked about who his center was in college and whether or not he was drafted. He was, in fact, drafted, says Fields — it's just that he was drafted by the wrong team.
When you record an outlandishly high mental aptitude test, as discussed in the video at the top of this page, you're expected to learn things quickly on the football field. But if the shorter clip from "1920 Football Drive" is any indication, he's developing the perfect sort of mindset for a Bears quarterback to — if not thrive on the gridiron — at least make a good impression on the fan base who's champing at the bit for a franchise star to lead them back to glory.
It appears that he had been gaining that sort of following before this clip came out anyway. FOX Sports NFL's Twitter account shared the 15 top-selling jerseys right now, and if not for Tim Tebow's sudden return to NFL action, Fields would occupy spot No. 1... and No. 2... and No. 3. Wow.
