For three innings, Jacob deGrom continued what's turning into one of the most dominant seasons in Major League Baseball history. Unfortunately, the New York Mets ace had to leave prematurely for the second consecutive start.
In three innings against the Chicago Cubs, deGrom struck out eight batters and allowed zero hits. He lowered his ERA to 0.54, and even added an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. deGrom now has six RBIs in 2021, two more than the amount of earned runs he's give up this season.
However, after striking out the side in the top of the third inning, deGrom was replaced by Sean Reid-Foley in the top of the fourth inning. The SNY broadcast showed an upset deGrom heading into the tunnel in the Mets dugout as the team prepared to bat in the bottom of the third inning. Mike Puma of The New York Post says that deGrom left with right shoulder soreness.
We'll presumably learn more after the game from Mets manager Luis Rojas about the perceived severity of deGrom's injury. He left his last start after six scoreless innings with a right elbow injury, but didn't ultimately miss any starts after an MRI showed no issues. deGrom also had a stint on the injured list with a right side injury earlier this season.
