Don’t count them out just yet, though. In fact, they might be the frontrunner.
The Cowboys spent weeks courting the star wideout, but once he finally had an official visit, the tone changed. There were reports that the Cowboys were concerned about his health, and Jerry Jones even admitted that he had some concerns about not seeing Beckham work out.
Even more doubt was cast when Beckham said last week that he didn’t see the point in playing during the regular season, followed by a report this week that he might just scrap a potential return this year and sign with a team in March.
But on Friday morning, a USA Today NFL columnist Jarrett Bell published a story that featured a confident Jones saying Beckham was likely to be joining the Cowboys.
“Odell’s going to join us,” Jones told Bell on Thursday. “There’s a good chance he will, with the complete goal of getting ready for a playoff game or two, and then I’ll look to the future. But most of it being about now. …
“I’m hopeful we can get into some important games and have some Deion Sanders-type results,” Jones said. “Could this be possible to have a great player like that get in two or three playoff games and make some significant plays? I think very much so. That’s not an exaggerated thought at all."
Jones also indicated that Beckham had been working out. During the owner’s weekly appearance on the “K&C Masterpiece,” he reiterated the confidence.
“I’m not going to go how close, but I can go very alive, very much, it’s very alive," Jones said of the talks.
“He and I want it to be alive, we all want it to be alive," Jones said. "And so we’re just working through things that are important to the future here.”
Wednesday on the GBag Nation, 105.3 The Fan’s Bryan Broaddus indicated that the Cowboys could sign Beckham “sooner than later.”
So, despite some uncertainty earlier on, now more than ever things seem to be trending in the direction of Beckham heading to Dallas.
