The San Francisco 49ers already were playing their second-string quarterback, and now they’re onto their third signal-caller.

Jimmy Garoppolo left Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins with a foot injury and won't return. He initially was considered questionable, but was ruled out in the second quarter. The injury was sustained in the first quarter during San Francisco's opening drive.
With Garoppolo out, Brock Purdy took over at quarterback for the 49ers. The 22-year-old rookie out of Iowa State has appeared in three games this season. He saw most of his action in a Week 7 loss to the Chiefs, going 4-for-9 in the air for 66 yards with an interception.
The 49ers have had some rough luck with injuries on offense, and already have a lack of depth in the rushing game with Elijah Mitchell on IR.
So, between the Dolphins scoring on their first play of the game and Garoppolo getting hurt shortly thereafter, Sunday didn’t get off to the smoothest start for the Niners.
