Kansas to Big Ten may be 'imminent,' according to insider

The college football landscape has seen some major changes in recent weeks — with Texas and Oklahoma leaving the Big 12 for the SEC — and now another school may be leaving that conference as well.

Kansas football insider Mike Vernon joined KCSP 610 on Tuesday and revealed that the Kansas Jayhawks could make a move into the Big Ten within the next couple of weeks.

“There’s been these rumors all day KU is headed to Big Ten. I dismissed it as message board fodder. I am starting to hear it from people who I consider to be pretty reliable that this thing is imminent,” Vernon said. “I’m not ready to say it for sure, but I tell you what, there’s some smoke coming out of Lawrence right now.”

As for a timeline, Vernon said a move could come “in the next couple of weeks. Maybe next week.”

Since the news that Oklahoma and Texas were bolting for the SEC, Kansas has been rumored as the next team to go.

While Vernon did not believe there was any steam initially, he feels like things may have changed because the opportunity is now there for them to make a move.

“That I don’t totally know. Trying to crack this entire code. I think there’s some more info to be had,” he said. “My one fear is that this rumor from UT message boards — which is now popping up across the internet — has become a giant circle of information and it’s gotten back to some reliable people. I don’t think it’s totally out of the question, which is why I want to keep digging in here. But it’s certainly coming from a more reliable circle than just message board fodder. What changed? Not totally sure but I think this has been in the cards for a while.”
