Now we know why Matthew Stafford wasn't at practice Wednesday for the Lions.

The quarterback has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Wednesday afternoon. Per NFL rules, Stafford won't be able to play in Sunday's game against the Vikings if he tested positive for the virus.

If he came into close contact with an infected person -- the other reason to send a player to the COVID-19 list -- he'll be eligible to play if he can complete a five-day isolation from the date of contact.

It's the second COVID case for the Lions this week, as linebacker Jarrad Davis tested positive on Tuesday. Matt Patricia said Wednesday before practice that no one would be sidelined due to Davis' positive test, so it doesn't appear the two cases are related.

Stafford tested positive for the virus during training camp, but it was later deemed to be a false positive. He said he never considered opting out of the season.

If Stafford can't go on Sunday, the Lions will turn to veteran backup Chase Daniel who they signed to a three-year deal in the offseason.

Matthew's wife, Kelly, took to her Instagram Wednesday night to say the family has tested negative. "We are all negative, my husband is negative. There was just a certain exposure, so we've been testing since our exposure and we are all negative," Stafford said.
