Detroit Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones delivered some heartbreaking news over the weekend.

The 29-year-old veteran wrote on Instagram that his 6-month-old son, Marlo, died on Friday.

“It is hard to believe that our little angel, our fighter from day one, our son ‘Marlito’ has unfortunately passed away and is no longer here with us,” he wrote in his Instagram caption underneath a picture of his son. “Marlo, the joy that you brought to us everyday, with that smile, and that engy was like heaven on Earth. You will always be in our hearts. We will always remember you.”

Marlo was the youngest of Jones and wife Jazmyn’s five children. Jones’ Instagram page is filled with pictures of himself with his wife and children, including a video just three days ago of all seven of them in matching pajamas wishing a Merry Christmas. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

The Lions announced the passing of Jones’ son in a statement on Saturday, showing support for their player and his wife.

“Marvin and Jazmyn embody the true meaning of family, and the example they set has made them an inspiration to so many in our community,” the team said in a statement. “We thank everyone for the outpouring of support.”

Jones was placed on the injured reserve earlier this month with an ankle injury and is out for the remainder of the season, so he will not be playing in Sunday’s Week 17 game against the Green Bay Packers.
