A rough first half got even worse for the Giants when what looked like a decent bit of improvising from punter Jamie Gillan turned into a disaster for Big Blue.

On a fourth-and-7 from the Giants’ 43, but he muffed the snap a bit and dropped the ball before he punted, instead modifying it into a sort-of rugby dropkick:

Gillan played rugby in Scotland before moving to the U.S., and it was a nice move to at least get the ball about 15 yards downfield.
Unfortunately, you can’t do that – once a punter drops the ball on the ground, it is illegal to then kick it without picking it up.

So, the result was a penalty for illegal kick, which is a 10-yard penalty and a loss of down…meaning the Eagles, already up 14-0, got the ball on the Giants’ 33 – and one play later, Jalen Hurts his A.J. Brown for a 33-yard touchdown that made it 21-0.
